Betty Lou

Cardinal

I see him each morning taking a walk
He always waves but never stops to talk
He seems so lonely sad and forlorn
His life's filled with such saddness and scorn

Roses

He's not as old as the wrinkles imply
He could still be handsome if only he'd try
His hands tremble for want of a drink
That muddles his mind so he can't think

Cardinal

I only hear rumors don't know it's true
That he was once wed to a girl Betty Lou
They seemed so happy with a baby of two
She left with another so what could he do?

Roses

He buried himself in the bottle they say
So he couldn't think of these gone away
But when morning comes the pain was anew
He would always love her and would remain true

Cardinal

His young life wasted oh what a sad fact
She'd be welcome now if she'd come back
Until then his heart breaks in two
Thinking of Mary and the baby of two

Cardinal

He sees them by faith even when he's asleep
He always awakes and then he does weep
Why oh why did it turn out this way
A question unanswered until his dying day

Cardinal
